The sun emits a variety of ultra violet rays that form a color spectrum. Different materials absorb these rays and others reflect them. Clouds, the sky and the oceans do not absorb the blue ultra violet rays and are refracted in the water molecules which is why they appear blue. Clouds appear white because of the sunlight that passes through them.
the darker clouds have more rain than evaporated water making it darker, some have less rain and more evaporated water. In some cases like a nimbo stratus cloud, it is very light but may contain lots of rain and lightning, this is because it has a lot of water content and evaporated water
It all has to do with the reflection of sunlight coming into the cloud from above. Darker (grey) clouds tend to be thicker with more water vapor and condensed water droplets, so they scatter more light away.
Clouds are not always white, when rain precipitates into the air it forms clouds and makes a blockage in the sky. When enough precipitation builds up the clouds turn a dark shade of gray!
when its dark it means u may have a storm or it may rain or sometimes even thunder and lightning. when its white it means its clear of any rain and you will probably enjoy a sunny day
Water vapor (clouds) diffuses and reflects all the wavelengths of light that our eyes are sensitive to, therefor the clouds appear white.
