A mineral is a naturally occurring inorganic element or compound having an orderly internal structure and characteristic chemical composition, crystal morphology and physical properties such as density and hardness. Minerals are the fundamental units from which most rocks are made.

It is not a mineral because, Obsidian (volcanic glass), has no orderly internal structure

There are two reasons why glass marbles are not considered minerals. Minerals, by definition have a crystalline structure that is regular and repeating. Secondly, glass marbles are man-made out of silica and other ingredients.

List the five characteristic a substance must have to be a mineral explain why coal and a glass marble are not minerals?

To be a mineral, a substance must be naturally occurring, inorganic, solid, have a definite chemical composition, and have an ordered atomic structure. Coal is organic in origin, formed from the remains of plants; therefore, it is not a mineral. A glass marble is man-made and lacks a naturally occurring origin, so it also does not meet the criteria to be considered a mineral.

Why are coal and glass marble not minerals?

Coal is not considered a mineral because it is composed of organic matter, primarily carbon, rather than being a naturally occurring inorganic compound. Glass marbles are man-made products created by melting and shaping glass, so they do not meet the criteria of being naturally formed minerals.
