The interpretation is important to understand the meaning. Sometime the non-verbal will give you something that is not being said in the words (like impatience) and you need to interpret the whole situation if you want to better understand what the speaker is saying.

What are the main methods of non verbal communication?

There are many many different ways that we communicate non-verbally. I just took a communications class and I never realized exactly all the non-verbal communications there are. The main common ones are : facial expressions, eye contact, hand and head gestures, posture (how you sit, walk, stand), space (the distance between you and the other person), haptics (touching their arm, shoulder, back, etc.) and para-linguistics (how your voice sounds, the pitch, tone, rhythm, etc.). All of these are non-verbal communications with the other person. There are also some less obvious non-verbal communications: our clothing, hair styles, the colors we wear, our cars, houses, jewelry, tattoos, etc. These all are considered means of non-verbal communication.

Is non-verbal communication important in itself or does it just help in the communication process?

Non-verbal communication is important in itself as it can convey emotions, attitudes, and intentions without using words. It complements verbal communication and can often provide additional meaning to the message being conveyed. Non-verbal cues such as facial expressions, gestures, and body language can significantly impact how a message is understood and received.
