Body temperature is important because it keeps our bodies working and functioning properly. Without it, we would all die. If your body temperature falls too low then respiration happens too slowly and you die. If your body temperature goes too high then the enzymes in your blood denature so they can't catalyze respiration and other reactions that go on around your body.

Your internal body temperature must be kept at around 37oC as this provides the optimum temperature for enzymes to work. Too high a temperature will lead to the enzymes losing their shape and not catalysing reactions; too low, and the rate of reactions will slow down. Without enzymes, vital bodily functions would not take place quickly enough, and you will die.

Temperature is a control mechamism used by the human brain / body in order to restore balance a certain balance within the human being. For example: this could be due to exertion or a virus. It is a valid function and therfore before trying to affect it in ANY way, one should consider why the increase or decrease has taken place. To do otherwise is contradicting the function of the brain.
