Why is it less exspencive to maintain an inkjet printer that has a black ink cartridge then one that doesn't?

Because an inkjet printer that does not use a black ink cartridge uses the more expensive color cartridge to produce a dull black.

∙ 15y agoBecause if the printer does not have a black ink cartridge, it has to mix all primary colors to produce a black dot. ORHaving a separate cartridge for black ink means that it prints true black and more important does not use the more expensive colored ink. To save money, you should be able to replace an empty black cartridge without having to replace all cartridges.

∙ 12y agoIf your printer only takes a single color cartridge it has three ink colors in the single cartridge. It will be sectioned into thirds containing Yellow, Magenta and Cyan. Each time you print something black it will draw all three colors to create black making your single cartridge run out three times faster than a similar black cartridge would as it wouldn't be sectioned and would just be a single large black chamber.

You lift up the front. If you only lift enough to see the glass of the scanner, you reach in a little furthur and lift that up.Basically sticking your fingers into the corner of the control panel and the top of the printer.Once you do, you pull the tabs on the ink and it flips open to reveal the ink.A:With power off, remove the cartridges, move cartridge holder to middle of print area, and then look inside the cartridge loading area at the bottom of the printer. There should be a cotton pad that catches the excess ink when the cartridge is cleaned. I've found on numerous occassions that this pad will sometimes get caught up in the mechanism and bunch up. Once it gets bunched up, it will not allow that back area to drop down to install the cartridges.You'll get ink all over your hands, but you should be able to move the internal mechanism directly below the cartridge loading area towards the back of the printer and then try and untangle the cotton pad and flatten it back out into the proper position. if you can get this done, reapply power and see if the problem is corrected.

Are remanufactured inkjet cartridges any good?
Refurbished or refilled ink cartridges generally work well, but often they contain a small circuit to tell the printer how much ink has gone through. After those cartridges are refilled, the printer software will tell you that the cartridge is empty. This is an attempt by the manufacturer to KEEP you from refilling the cartridge, since some of the "features" of the printer will no longer work. Inkjet printers are cheap to purchase, but the ink is so expensive that you might find a better printing option by purchasing a laser printer.

I recommend not to plug the printer to your computer yet. Insert the installation CD that came with the printer in your computer. Run the software. It will also show you instructions on how to setup the printer itself. Follow the instructions. If you don't have the installation CD, you can download the updated driver from the Lexmark website www.lexmark.com. Hope this helps.
