Quite directly, they are temperate. Temperate means moderate. So the winters are cold but not too cold nor warm, and the summers are warm but not too hot or cool.

The climate of Western Australia varies. Much of the state is desert, so much of it has a hot and dry climate. However, the northwestern corner of the state is particularly prone to summer cyclones, and experiences a subtropical climate for this reason. The southern corner is more temperate.

Well the Northern temperate zone is from the tropic of cancer (23.5 degrees north to the arctic circle). So, most of Canada, some of the US, much of western Europe etc. The Southern temperate zone is from 23.5 degrees south latitude to the Antarctic Circle. Peru, South Africa, some of Australia lie in this zone. There are many other countries in the Northern Temperate Zone.
