your iPod probably has a lock with a circle on the top bar next to the battery icon (if it is jailbroken or is an iPod 4g). If so, double click the home button and scroll to the music dock and press the button on the left. (screen rotation lock)

You can turn off the iPod Touch if you jailbreak it.
There is a small button on the top left hand corner of the iPod Touch, on the top. Hold that button for a few seconds until the Apple logo appears on the screen, then release the button and wait for it to turn on and go to the main screen.
Turning on an iPod is simple. For an iPod Touch or iPhone, hit the top right button or the circular button below the screen. Then slide to unlock. For other iPods, touch the center circular button just below the screen, inside of the white circle.
