The milky cloudiness in older dogs eyes are cataracts. Eventually, if the dog lives long enough, it will be completely blind. But dogs do not rely heavily on their sense of sight, and blind dogs usually manage alright. The above answer is so true. I always have two dogs. I had one dog (off an Indian Reservation) named Shawnee and she lived to the ripe old age of 20. I also had a full bred Cairn named Daisy who was much younger. When Shawnee went blind from cataracts she would follow Daisy and sometimes Shawnee would whisk down the trail we were on all on her own and had a keen sense of smell. Of course my husband and I would always be chatting (on purpose sometimes) so she could follow our voices. Dogs and cats are incredible creatures for having a great sense of smell.
