Oil is used in Transformers to insulate and cool the windings.since heat reduces the efficiency of every electrical machine, oil is used in transformer for example to cool and maintain the efficiency level of the transformer .

Oil has two functions: (1) to limit its temperature increase, and (2) to insulate those internal components that are at different potentials.

Because oil has a much greater specific heat capacity than air, it allows the transformer to supply greater loads without overheating than if it used air for cooling.

Because oil is a much better insulator than air, internal components at different potentials can be placed much closer together and this reduces the overall size and, therefore, the 'footprint' of the transformer, so it can occupy far less space.
