elements are those which has same kind of atoms ex. oxygen, hydrogen etc. but when you join two elements you get a compound. ex. react oxygen and hydrogen you get water.

elements are atoms of the same kind. so if you cut up a piece of sugar paper of different colours and 5 of you did this and 3 where squares and 2 where circles and you joined 2 circles together of the same size (roughly) and nearly same colour then they are an elements. but if they where different colour or sizes then they would just be a compound.
