A cell membrane is referred to as the bilayer membrane. It is composed of phospholipids, lipids that consist of two fatty acids and a phosphate group attached to a glycerol molecule. Fatty acids are nonpolar, so as a rule they are hydrophobic. The phosphate group sticks out in the opposite direction of the two fatty acids and is polar, so it is hydrophilic. In short, the phospholipid has a hydrophilic head with two hydrophobic tails extending off of it. In the case of the cell membrane, phospholipids arrange themselves in a layer of two (bilayer) with the hydrophilic heads forming the outer "walls" and the hydrophobic tails on the inside. That way, the hydrophilic heads can keep water away from the hydrophobic tails. This membrane facilitates the movement of things in and out of cells.

Cell membranes are composed of a double-layer, or 'bilayer' of molecules known as phospholipids. These have a hydrophilic (water loving) head, the phosphate group, and a hydrophobic (water hating) tail, a lipid. These molecules line up with the heads facing out and the tails facing in, forming a lipid bilayer.
