Despite what Creationist would have you believe (when debating other topics) theory does not mean hypothesis or speculation. In science, a theory is an explanation of the natural world that is well-substantiated by evidence. This includes a number of explanations that are so well-substantiated by evidence that there is virtually no doubt among scientists that it is the correct explanation. These include the theory of plate tectonics, the thoery of evolution, atomic theory, and germ theory.

∙ 13y agoJust a theory? You seem to be confused about the meaning of scientific theory and the meaning of 'theory' as simply an idea. Plate tectonics is an accepted branch of geology that studies and explains movement of the earth's crust: continental drift, volcanic and seismic. ∙ 13y agoPlate tectonics is a theory and not a law because there is no way that we can observe how the plates move, therefore it remains a theory. Plate tectonics is an explanation that is accepted as to why Earth's continents are where they are today.
