As a backup for saving files. You may lose data if it is not saved to secondary storage. When you turn off your computer, any unsaved data is lost. That is why you need to save it to something like a USB key.

memory is a place in computer used to store data, instruction and information. Computer have primary memory that is not used to store bulk data, so we used storage devices like hard disk, floppy disk, compact disk (CD), digital versatile disk (DVD) etc. which are called secondary memory. we use secondary memory to store bulk data permanently.

we need secondary storage devices to save all our data in original form so that we won't lose it on turning our computer off
This is needed for two reasons:

  • The computer's working memory is finite and limited in size so it cannot always hold the data we need.
  • In secondary storage data and programs do not disappear when power is turned off as they do when semiconductor memories are used.

Without secondary storage, you would lose all of your data everytime your computer powered down. In other words, your computer would not have anywhere to save data indefinitely.

secondary storage devise are non -volatile memory ..that is they are premanent storage devices..
-Prevent lost of data..
-backups
