Many Precambrian rocks have gone through the rock cycle and been altered or transformed because of the number of years that have passed (over half a billion), and because of the vastness of the ancient time span (over 4 billion years).

Data on prehistoric time periods is obtained largely by studying rocks and fossils from those times. The older the time period, the fewer rocks exist from that time period. Older rocks are also more likely to have been altered by natrual forces, which can distort or destroy information. When we get to Precambiran times, nearly all of the rocks have been destroyed or altered, or are buried miles beneath the surface.

The Precambrian fossil record is poor, and those fossils present are of limited biostratigraphic use. Many Precambrian rocks are heavily metamorphosed, obscuring their origins, while others have either been destroyed by erosion, or remain deeply buried beneath Phanerozoic strata.

Actually a lot is known about. Historians can go back 65 million years and have found early man dating about 12000 years ago. More information is always being uncovered and found. So it is never ending.
