It is a remnant of the ancient Tethys Ocean and became landlocked about 5 million years ago due to continental drift.
The Caspian Sea is called a lake as it is bounded by land on all sides and has no access to any ocean and neither joins any other sea. Owing to large size and saline water it has been named as a sea but it is a lake.
The Caspian's name is somewhat misleading. The name, Caspian Sea, obviously suggests that the body of water is a sea. When you think of a sea you usually think of a large body of water a part of the ocean, such as the Caribbean Sea. However, there are bodies of water known as landlocked seas or inland seas. These are basically massive lakes that are too large to be considered a lake, such as the Caspian Sea or the Great Lakes.
So, it is misleading because if you hear the name you think of a massive sea connected to an ocean while in reality it is truly a landlocked sea.
The name comes from the ancient Caspi people that lived in the region.
The Caspian Sea got its name by the tribe Caspi people that lived in that time.
It was viewed to be boundless due to its size, and it is saltwater.
