What looks like triangles are inter-crossed trusses of wrought iron. The Eiffel tower being a tall structure, the engineers had to face the problem of balance, equilibrium and resistance.

The use of trusses and triangles actually increases the strength of the structure to a huge extent, because among all known polygons, the triangle is the only figure that CANNOT be misshaped or lose its original shape, unless acted upon with extreme forces (depending of course on the resistance of the material used). That is, because a triangle only has three sides, all of which are connected to other, so there is no angle where a side can freely "pivot" about.

This technique is a common feature of most metallic structures and huge constructions.
