Mary was a good and morally excellent woman. She did all that she could to keep the commandments. Worshiped the one and only true God, helped those in need and made herself available to all who needed advice. Was a good listener and thought of others rather than self.

Jesus, while dying on the cross bequeathed the Blessed Virgin Mary to St. John with the words, "behold your mother" and bequeathed John to her with the words, "Behold your son". In doing this, St. John stands for us, and Our Blessed Lord bequeathed all of us to Mary as her children.

We are all called to model her in her poverty, chastity, and obedience:

Every person is called to be poor with the poor Christ, to give up what he does not need to help his poor neighbor. As St. John the Baptist put it, "if you have two cloaks and your neighbor has none, then you give one to him.

We are all called to chastity in our state of life, single people are called to complete chastity, married people are called to be chaste in that they only have relations with their spouse and never in a selfish way.

Finally, we must all be obedient to God, to His church, to our lawful superiors (country, elected officials, boss, parents) and to be obedient to each other seeing Christ in each and every person in front of us.

In all of this we model the Blessed Virgin, who was poor, literally, with Christ; who was chaste her entire life; and who was the model of obedience to God's will for her beginning with her "Be it done unto me according to Your Word". We ask her for her intercession with her son for strength and for her guidance in doing so.

We don't. & we never did. From the most ancient times the Blessed Virgin has been honored with the title of 'Mother of God,' to whose protection the faithful fly in all their dangers and needs. . . . This very special devotion . . . differs essentially from the adoration which is given to the incarnate Word and equally to the Father and the Holy Spirit, and greatly fosters this adoration."514 The liturgical feasts dedicated to the Mother of God and Marian prayer, such as the rosary, an "epitome of the whole Gospel," express this devotion to the Virgin Mary.515 " ~Catechism of the Catholic ChurchI am posting a link to a site that also explains more about what Catholics believe about Mary & why they honor her.
