What bird is the symbol of the United States?
Way back when the US was being formed, someone suggested having a national animal to represent the United States. Ben Franklin suggested naming the turkey as the national animal, but others thought the bald eagle to be more admirable and and brave.

It sounds as if you have a privately-issued piece and not a genuine US coin. Both the familiar Morgan dollars and the less-common Trade dollars minted in 1878 have an eagle on the back. Also a Morgan dollar had about 24 gm of silver while a trade dollar was very slightly heavier at 24.3 gm which are very different from what's shown on your item.

Sorry this isn't a American silver eagle. This is a Morgan silver dollar. The mintmark is located above the DO in DOLLAR on the back of the coin.
