Why does gout attack the big toe?
Gout does not necessarily attack only the big toe. It often affects numerous parts of the body. Most likely, the best answer may be that it is the most distal (farthest) part of the body, and that blood tends to pool there and deposit uric acid crystals. Gout tends most often, but not always, to settle in the peripheries of the body. These are the parts of the body that are the coolest. It has been found that gout effects the cooler extremities most often.
