Because that was where the colonists traded, so that was their source of income. And when that was blocked off, they just kept growing poorer and poorer from not being able to make more money.

To strangle the Souths lifeline of trade with Europe. The Confederacy ould not be able to trade cotton for armament food, medicine and the like. The blockade was a part of the Anaconda Plan, where all sea ports and river ports were sealed. It was effective, but not completely. Only after the fall of Vicksburgh on the Mississippi River in July 1863 did the blockade really take its toll.
On April 19, 1861, only six days after the surrender of Fort Sumter, President Lincoln declared a naval blockade on the ports of all the states involved in the Southern rebellion. Secondary objectives included the protection of all US overseas commerce and the support of Union land campaigns.Since the South had no navy the protection of US commerce was at least a prediction that such commerce may be placed in danger bu Rebel states. The blockade has often been scrutinized as a move that in a defacto manner declared by international laws , made the Confederacy a foreign power. Not much was made of this at the time.
The Anaconda Plan called for all of the South's major ports, including Florida, to be blockaded to prevent them from getting supplies from foreign sources, and from selling their cash crops, such as cotton.

The original Anaconda Plan did call for, in part, a blockade of Confederate ports on its east and southern coasts. The blockade's effectiveness is disputed by historians. Much of the South's in and out shipping was able to run past the blockade by cover of night. Also, as the coastlines were huge, there could not be a total 100% blockade. It did, however, stop many ships from sailing into Southern ports.
Union blockade on all ports.
Blockades on Southern ports were set up in the Anaconda Plan. This plan was to use naval vessels to block all ports within the Confederates States. If they could not get their cotton out to market then they could not bring in any supplies.

The Union's Secretary of the Navy was Gideon Welles. After President Lincoln proclaimed the Union blockade, Welles issued a detailed statement concerning the goals of the blockade. The strategy was as follows:1. The closing of all insurgent ports along a coastline of almost 3,000 miles; 2. Combined efforts of the navy and the army to use force to capture or destroy the Rebel ports; and 3. The active pursuit and capture of privateer ships attempting to slip pass the blockade.
By using the word 'blockade', it appeared to recognise the Confederacy as a sovereign nation with which the USA was at war. However, the blockade (under whatever title) proved highly effective in preventing the South from importing war supplies in echange for its cotton.
The North used a strategy called the "Anaconda Plan". The plan was to set up a naval blockade along the eastern coast. The goal was to to block imports to the South and to strangle the South's economy. Hence, the name anaconda.
