The state bird was established by Senate resolution, not by law, on April 23, 1927. It is generally understood that the bird referred to is the Northern Mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos).
The reasons that the Legislature
"threw the arm of its protecting care around the Mocking Bird by the enactment of suitable legislation"
were that:
-- "This bird of matchless charm is found throughout the state.
-- "The melody of its music has delighted the heart of residents and visitors to Florida from the days of the rugged pioneer to the present comer."
The Mockingbird was chosen as the Florida State Bird because it was mostly common in Florida.
