The potatoes become flacid because the salt water drins out the moisture from the cells of the potatoes. This process is called exo-osmosis . The cells lose their turgidity and hence the potatoes become flacid :)

Why does it matter if the root is in a hypertonic or hypotonic solution?

If the root is in hypotonic solution then the root will remain turgid. If placed in a hypertonic solution then the root will become flaccid over time.

What is the opposite of a turgid cell?

The opposite of a turgid plant cell is called a flaccid plant cell. A walled cell is flaccid in surroundings where there is no tendency for water to enter. A turgid wall is very form, while a flaccid cell wall is more limp.

Why do herbaceous plants wilt when they do not have enough water and stand erect when they have water?

This relates to the type of solution the plant cells are exposed to. In general, there are 3 distinct types of solutions in nature: hypotonic, isotonic, and hypertonic. A hypotonic solution is one that has a low concentration of a solute relative to the solute concentration inside the cell, such as distilled water. An isotonic solution has the same solute concentration as the inside of the cell. A hypertonic solution has a higher concentration of solute than the inside of the cell.Back to the plants...When plants wilt, that means the are exposed to an isotonic solution. When this happens, the net amount of water moving between cells and the environment is equal. As a result, the cell becomes flaccid and the plant wilts. When plants stand erect, this is a result of turgor pressure. When in a hypotonic solution, such as distilled water, the plant cells absorb the water and store it in its central vacuole. The cell cytoplasm enlarges and pushes up against the sturdy cell walls. This cell is said to be turgid, or stable.

What change will occur if a piece of peeled potato is dropped in a concentrated sugar solution?

The potato may show some shrinking, but the more observable change is loss in mass of the peeled potato. Water will move out of the potato by osmosis. In osmosis, the water moves from the area of higher concentration to the area of lower concentration. There is lower water concentration outside of the potato because of the high amount of sugar dissolved in it. Depending on the concentration differences between the potato and the solution, water loss will continue until an equilibrium is reached. The potato piece will become flaccid (floppy)/plasmolysed, because of the water loss it has suffered. Shrinkage results from loss of turgor pressure in the potato, as a result of it becoming plasmolysed.

What is a Grower and a Shower?

A "Shower" is a man who has a large flaccid penis, which stays around the same size when erect. A "Grower" is a men whose flaccid penis is small, but becomes much larger when erect. You can see an example of a grower at GrowerVsShower.com

What will happen when you boil a green leaf in a test tube?

What does an onion cell look like after adding a salt solution NaCl?

This depends on the nature of the NaCl solution...If it is a Hyper-tonic solution (More concentrated solution than onion cells), water will move by osmosis down it's concentration gradient, from a region of less negative water potential (high Ψ) in the onion cell, to a region of more negative water potential (low Ψ) in the solution through a selectively/partially permeable membrane;so the onion cell will be plasmolysed and will look "flaccid" (vacuole gets smaller and shrinks). The vice versa happens with a Hypo-tonic (less concentrated solution than onion cell) NaCl solution; The onion cell will then look "turgid" (has a large vacuole exerting a pressure on the cytoplasm and pushing it towards the cell's cellwall to make it "tensed".

Why would a carrot left on the counter become limp?

Since the carrot is being exposed to an isotonic environment, there is no net tendency for water to enter through osmosis, so it becomes flaccid.

Is the heart flaccid?

What will the water do if you immerse a living cell into hypertonic solution?

When dealing with cells and their surrounding environment, if the outside of the cell is hypertonic (more salty), water will move out of the cell. This is an effort for the concentration of the salt to even out. The cell will shrink as a result.
