Best Answer

Mostly to impress female birds.

------------------------------------------------------

Above is BS because even female birds have large breast/chest muscles. Male coloring (plumage) is partly to attract a mate and partly to provide distraction to keep predators from the nest.

In order to fly birds must have a broad chest with large breast muscles to pull forcefully on the wings.

What is the sternum of a bird?

Birds have there forelimbs modified into wings to fly. The chest muscles has to be very much stronger in birds to enable them to fly. To bear the force of flying, the sternum in birds has be relatively large as compared to human being.

Why can a bird fly but a fly can't bird?

Its because fly is both a noun and a verb, so it can be done, and in this case a bird happens to be able to fly. But sadly, bird is a noun and not a verb, so you cannot bird.

Do penguins come under ratites?

I do not think so, as ratites have no keel and have a flat sternum. Ostriches are an example of this large flightless bird that could not fly even if it had large enough wings. No keel to anchor the flight muscles.

What are chest muscles on a bird for?

By chest muscles I am assuming you mean the bird's breast. In that case they perform the same operation as the pectoralis major in humans which is horizontal adduction. Essentially bringing the limbs from the side of the body to the front. This is the motion required by the bird to push air downward during each stroke of its wing. These muscles allow the bird to fly.
