To have somewhere to make the proton gradient in. The H+ have stored electric potential energy inside the proton gradient, and that energy is used to synthesize ATP from ADP and Pi when they pass through ATPase to the other side of the proton gradient where they acquire a low energy state.

Recalling endosymbiont-theory, many millions of years ago a cell was hungry and incorporated a bacterium. So the cell wrapped a lysosome around the bacterium and tried to digest it. But somehow the bacterium resisted and both found that it's an advantage for them to live in symbiosis. The cell fed the bacterium with nutrients and it reciprocated by donating his host energy (ATP).

The proof lies within the form of the double membrane: the inner membrane has many wrinkles and resembles a bacterium while the outer membrane is smooth, like the mantle of a lysosome.

What organelle is surrounded by a double membrane?

Mitochondria are the only organelle in a cell which is surrounded by a double layered membrane. Also chloroplast in plants are surrounded by double layered membrane.

What two other organelles besides the mitochondria contain DNA and have a double membrane?

mitochondria, and chloroplasts.

The mitochondria and the chloroplast are organelles that have a double membrane.

What three orgenelles have a double membrane?

The three cell organelles that have double membranes are: 1. Nucleus 2. Mitochondria 3. Chloroplast

Is it true that Mitochondria are double membrane organelles.?

No,it is not the only organelle. Many other organelles have double membranes. Ex: Chloroplast, lysosoem, vacuole etc

A cellular organelle that possess a membrane?

Most cellular organelles have membranes. Mitochondria, chloroplasts and nucleus are special among those because they have double membranes instead of single.

Why are mitochondria and chloroplast so important?

As double-membrane bound organelles, mitochondria are major to animals functions in cellular respiration and chloroplasts are a major aspect to a plant's photosynthesis process.

What is the purpose or usefulness of organelles that have a double membrane?

Mitochondria (producing cell energy), and chloroplast (photosyntesis) are the organelles with double membrane. Endosymbiotic theory - during evolution smaller prokaryots were consumed by bigger cells, and developed protective coat, hence the double membrane

What organelles that have a double membrane?
