It takes place a few months after the events of The Last Olympian, and features new characters and a new great prophecy.
The Son of Neptune happens to be the second book in The Heroes of Olympus series, which sometimes can be confused with The Sea of Monsters, as they are both the second book in their minor series. However, The Sea of Monsters is the second book in the Camp Half-Bloodseries, while The Son of Neptune is the seventh.
