True sterling silver will not leave green marks on your finger. Sterling from North America is fine silver ( .999 pure) a .925 % and copper makes of the rest of the alloy. Other locations will ofter mix fine silver with nickel.

I assume whatever metal your ring is made of it oxidizing and the oxidation is rubbing off onto your skin causing a green mark to show.

How can you test a coin for real silver?

Sterling Silver is very easy to test. Silver plated brass, nickel silver or low quality silver alloys will turn green when a drop of Nitric acid is applied. Sterling will turn a creamy color. Testing kits made specifically to test sterling silver are available from many jewelry supply companies.

What makes sterling silver tarnish?

exposure to substances which react with the surface of the metal, usually sulphur. Sterling silver is .925 (925%) pure silver. The other .75 is made up of an alloy consisting mainly of copper which oxidizes over time. When copper is exposed to oxygen, it darkens and eventually turns green. Sterling silver doesn't usually turn green but will turn almost black if not protected. Fine silver or .999 silver doesn't tarnish. Argentium silver is a new type of sterling silver that is tarnish-resistant. Only certain chemicals will tarnish Argentium but it will not tarnish from oxidation. Some metals that contain little to no silver are branded with names that make it seem like real silver. One of these metals is nickle silver, which doesn't contain any silver at all.

Is 925 sterling silver from China true sterling?

Hi,you can check your `sterling silver` jewellery from China with these easy tricks:You may test it with nitric acid. In an inconspicuous place on the item, lightly scratch or scuff a small spot and apply a tiny drop of nitric acid to the spot. Silver plated brass, nickel silver or low quality silver alloys will turn green when a drop of nitric acid is applied because of the high copper content. Sterling will turn a creamy color. If it turns black, it is coin silver. When testing items you suspect may be silver plated, use a small file to cut through any plating or lacquer in a discreet area on the item. If you see a gold color, you can assume it is brass that has been silver plated.Another test is to use a magnet. Sterling silver will not stick to a magnet, but just because the piece does not stick does not mean that it is sterling silver. Therefore, use this only as a secondary test.

Why does your finger turn green?

If a person has a natural high acidity level in his/her skin, it is possible for his/her finger to "turn green" from silver or gold jewelry, especially when the weather is hot and humid. Please don't blame silver or a manufacture of silver jewelry. The green is actually caused by oxidation, and all silver will oxidize (it's also what gives silver a tarnished look). There are some cheap jewelry items that cause the same effect. Most of them contain nickel. It's not poisonous in small quantities but it can provoke a reaction in people allergic to nickel. This "green finger effect" may also be an allergic reaction to alloy elements in sterling silver or gold. In some cases, the alloys, used to make jewelry more durable, may react with your body chemistry, causing a harmless green or black discoloration on the skin, which can be easily removed with soap and water. For this reason, most retail silver jewelry and white gold jewelry is plated with rhodium, which serves as a defensive layer and prevents this reaction from happening to anyone with allergy. Another reason may be lotions, soap or chemicals that come into contact with your skin on an everyday basis.
