Thykaloids are the bit inside the chloroplasts in plant cells that contains the chlorophyll, the chemical which allows photosynthesis (the chemical reaction that produces energy in plants) to take place. They are stacks of sacs that look like a stack of pancakes. The individual sacs are thykaloids, and the stacks are called granum. Without the thykaloids, the chlorophyll would have nowhere to attach itself to, meaning that the plant wouldn't be able to produce energy and would die.

It is part of photosynthesis. If there was no light the plant would not be able to photosynthesize meaning that it would not be able to produce food. If it does not produce food it will die!
