From my experience, they consider it bragging rights. However, if the scenario at Fulda Gap had ever happened, Cavalry units would've had cooks who were further ahead of the lines than any of the infantry, so....

Other than that, being in a line unit would prepare you better for any type of Special Forces selection you may wish to attend, and you'd be more likely to be eligible for enlistment bonuses.

The infantry appeals to some because it provides a sense of machismo. After all, the military is either infantry, or infantry support.

Related Information:

Certain infantrymen tend to devalue these support units. They don't always give enough credit to other units or individuals who operate forward of infantry units. Examples: when we made the initial push into Kuwait, and again in Iraq, Cavalry units led the formations - these were deployed far forward of infantry units.

It should also be said that these two engagements, in their initial phases, did not call for the use of infantry in any great numbers. These engagements became infantry operations with armor support, once the major armor operations were concluded. It is always the dangerous funcion of infantry soldiers to do the inch-by-inch and door-to-door work and to engage native civilians in a positive way. Further, this (infantry) phase, in Iraq, has lasted years, and is ongoing at this time, while the major armor vs. armor engagement ended in a matter of days.

One more point: There were special operations people (infantrymen) on the ground weeks before the invasion took place. Many of these remained behind Iraqi lines to hunt the scuds and to identify other targets for coalition air craft.
