How did the pineapple get its name?

The first use of the term "pineapple" in the English language (1398) was applied to the reproductive organs of conifer trees - later known as "pine cones"

When European explorers discovered this fruit they called it a "pineapple" because its hard petals (bracts) give it a resemblance to pine cones.
