Basic rule: Where salt is, water will follow. Basic rule #2: An increase in volume, will cause an increase in pressure. So, if you increase the level of salt in your blood from your diet, then you will also cause more water to be retained. This water will increase your total volume in your body which will be picked up by the body. The increase in volume, will also increase the pressure. Through diuresis, your body may able to self regulate itself over a period of a few weeks, where your volume will increase from the heavy salt intake, but then your body will try to excrete that extra salt, causing water to follow the extra salt, thus lowering your salt/vol/pressure levels. In hypertension where the cause is unknown, the body can not naturally regulate the salt/vol/pressure relationship when there is too much salt in the system.. The high salt causes water to be retained, which increases your blood volume, and this increases the blood volume which increases the pressure. So if you have HIGH BP, you must restrict your salt intake to less than 2000-1500mg (ask your doc for what your daily salt limit should be). Avoid frozen dinners, canned foods, cured meats etc...things that have a high salt content.
