The school year was originally set for a society that was 95% farmers and families needed children to help with the crops and farms. Today, this is no longer true. The 10% of the farms are now big business concerns and the family farm no longer exists the same way it did a 100 years ago, so to base a modern school year or times on the seasons no longer makes sense. Schools for the past several years have been starting earlier because the longer a student is away from the classroom the more they forget from the previous year so there is an advantage to starting sooner.
