ill take a stab at this and say im assumming that the silencer is "up" instead of down in a tractor is that if the silencer faces down then the sound hits the ground and bounds up to retain the same note or tone or atleast reduce the silencing effect to an extent, sort of the same is you cup your hands around a cell phone speaker, it sounds louder as it has more "walls" that the sound wave hits and there fore "sounds" louder but it is the same level just the sound waves have had there sound redirected, if its up in the air then the waves have less resistance to be expelled freely. hope this helps, welcome improvements if i have misstated something, cheers
