The keyboard is connected to the serial port due to the fact that serial cords are much faster at transmitting and receiving data compared to a parallel cord. Serial sends multiple data in both directions and parallel can only send data along a few lines in only one direction, so the data has to wait for the path to clear before data paths can switch.
Computer peripherals are connected to ports. For instance, a printer may be connected to a serial or parallel port. Modern keyboards and mice are commonly connected to the computer using the USB port.
USB port (Unassigned Serial Port)
Serial printers are connected via the serial (COM) port of the computer. "Non-serial" printers are connected through another interface, such as the parallel port, USB, ADB. FireWire, etc...
The serial and parallel ports are slow, have limited expandability and don't carry their own charge of electricity.these ports work fine for connecting Printers, Mice and keyboards to PC but all these device will perform better if connected to a USB port
A serial mouse, some older dot matrix printers...
In the past external modems connected to the COM (or serial) port. However, most modern external hardware is USB these days, modems are no exception.

To provide the exchange of data, and also to power or charge the devices connected. It is an acronym for universal serial bus port.
Terminal connections for controlling devices, some times Mice or older keyboards. Not commonly used any more.
A serial port can be connected to numerous devices; pretty much any device that has another serial port. Examples include: Modems, serial mice, serial printers, bar code readers, digital scales, data acquisition equipment, pumps, flow monitors, radios, etc. I have a ham radio receiver that is controlled completely through a serial port and custom software; and I am writing a custom piece of software right now that connects through the serial port to a digital scale for process automation.
A keyboard can be connected to PS2 port or a USB port
