the north won the civil war is that it had several economic advantages. For instance, in 1860 the population in the North was about 22 million while in the South was about 9 million people. That giving the North a greater advangte in starting a army and supporting war efforts. About one third of slaves had to fight in the war thus having fewer southerner people working to support the war efforts. In 1860 about 80 percent of the nation's factories were in the North. It produced 93 percent of its iron, execellent for manufacturing weapons and equipment. The Union believed that the best way to win the war to rearange their troops into tight coloumns and go the offensive. Troops would march towards the Confederate's firing their weapons and when they got close enough they would charge the enemy and attack with their bayonets. By 1862 the Union navy Blockcked off every major Southern harbor along the Atlantic coast. David G. Farragut took 42 warships and 15,000 solider led by General Benjamin Butler. Farraguts plan to destroy the forts in Mississippi river failed. Leading him to go upriver which at the end only four ships survived. But finally General Butler's troops took control of the city, the South's largest city and a center of the cotton trade.
