The word "mentor" derives from a name, Mentor. He was the son of Alkimos and in his old age, a friend to Odysseos. Because of their relationship, Mentor was left in charge of the education of Odysseos' son, Telemakhos. When Athena visited Telemakhos to encourage him to stand up to his mother's suitors, it was in the guise of Mentor.
