∙ 11y agoNew Orleans was the colonial capital, but the government was moved to Baton Rouge in 1849. During the Civil War (1861-1865), the Confederate state government relocated to Opelousas and to Shreveport. New Orleans was again the capital during Reconstruction. It finally returned to Baton Rouge in 1882.

∙ 10y agoThe state capital was moved from New Orleans to Baton Rouge because of complaints of legislators from the northern part of the state. They wanted to move the capital to a more central location so that travel would be easier for all.
