New Orleans was the colonial capital, but the government was moved to Baton Rouge in 1849. During the Civil War (1861-1865), the Confederate state government relocated to Opelousas and to Shreveport. New Orleans was again the capital during Reconstruction. It finally returned to Baton Rouge in 1882.
