The gap between Charles I and Charles II is due to the English Civil War that resulted in the execution of Charles I in 1649. After his death, England became a republic led by Oliver Cromwell. Charles II, son of Charles I, was later restored to the throne in 1660 after the monarchy was reinstated with the end of the Commonwealth period.

King Charles I of England was executed for treason on 30 January 1649. Following his execution, England became a Republic, governed by Oliver Cromwell, who took the title Lord Protector. In 1660, the monarchy was restored and Charles I's son became king as Charles II.
King Charles the First reigned from 1625, fought and lost the Civil War to Oliver Cromwell, and was executed in London in January 1649. His elder son Charles immediately titled himself Charles the Second, which was recognised in Scotland, but not in England, where Cromwell installed a republican military government, giving himself the title 'Protector of the Realm'. On his death in September 1658, his elder son Richard Cromwell officially succeeded him in this job, but proved incompetent, and left the country. The monarchy was restored with the arrival from exile of Charles the Second in May 1660.
