Old Fort Erie is shaped like a star because it is based on a common design of the 1700s and 1800s known as a Vauban Fortress. Marshall Vauban developed it in France with the idea that the shape eliminates any blind spots, the angles help deflect incoming cannon fire, and the points would force enemy troops to break formation when attacking.
