Why was the sea of Galilee special to jesus?

Galilee was a backwater. Damascus, to the north, was the centre of Roman power for the entire Syro-Palestine region. Jerusalem, far to the south, was the centre of power for the Jewish priesthood. The only claim to fame for first-century Galilee was that the mission of Jesus is reported to have been centred there.

Galilee is important to Jesus because of Prophecy.

Jesus being God Almighty manifest in the flesh (1 timothy 3:16), and not one to let his word fail, prophesied through the Prophet Micah (Mic. 5:2), and, in Mt. 2:23, the prophets Is.11:1, Zech. 3:8 the region and character by which he would come to be the savior of his people; to identify his person, Jesus, as the one to look to, follow, and obey as opposed to any, and all others using the same first name.
