The city of Stalingrad (modern day Volgograd) was a city that lay athwart the major river of the Volga which was a major supply route for the Russian war effort . The Germans sought to sever this major logistical asset by taking the city , they failed .

The Germans , notably the Sixth Army , at Stalingrad under von Paulus were effectively surrounded and cut off from supplies and they were ultimately forced to fight a war of attrition which resulted in exhausting any remaining resources that the Germans had had and were compelled by circumstances to surrender to the Russians because they had gone beyond the point of any effective resistance .

They were at battle because Germany needed the Caucasus oil fields to prolong the war as long they need to claim victory. The battle took place at Stalingrad when the German military when German 6th army approached the city and the Luftwaffe heavy attacked the area.

It was difficult for both the USSR and the Germans for many reasons. The main ones that the Battle of Stalingrad was mainly fought as a combination of street fight and urban guerrilla warfare. This were tactics that neither side learnt and they had to fight for 1 room at the time rather than every 10 miles, which both sides were used to fighting for.
