Any reef is dangerous for sailors. Reefs contain sharp coral outcrops which may lie just beneath the surface. Olden-style ships could be easily damaged on the sharp coral, and it was very difficult for ships to navigate through the reef. Even the most experienced sea-captains who knew the Reef could make a small mistake, and find his ship run aground and requiring repair.

The Great Barrier Reef poses unseen dangers for navigators. Sharp rocks and corals lie beneath the surface of the water, often hidden, and ships can be damaged on these. It is also particularly difficult for ships to navigate between the many coral reefs.

It is more that navigators are a threat to the Great Barrier Reef. Shipping poses considerable risk to the Reef, as oil spills can cause a great deal of damage. The Great Barrier Reefses many hazards to the unwary - as James Cook was the first to find out when his ship The Endeavour ran aground on the Reef back in 1770. Many a ship's navigator has been careless navigating through the reef, taking unnecessary shortcuts and not following the navigation charts, and therefore causing damage.
