Napoleon had the ambition of ruling as many territories as he could. He was a brilliant military leader, hardly ever losing in confrontations. If Napoleon managed to acquire territories overseas, it would be likely he would soon manage to expand those, by taking over already occupied lands, such as the area corresponding to the United States.
