Generally... Jesus went up on a "hill" or "mountain" [where His disciples would follow Him, privately]... in order to "get away" from the pressing crowds of thousands, who flocked to Him for healing or the random free meal.

"...on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met Him." (Luke 9:37)

"And seeing the multitudes, He went up into a mountain: and when He was set, His disciples came unto Him: and He opened His mouth, AND TAUGHT THEM..." (Matt.5:1-2).

This passage is the beginning of what is called by some as "the Beatitudes" [or the 'Sermon on the Mount'] that's commonly believed Jesus taught to the "multitudes." But it wasn't. Jesus was teaching the relatively small group of His disciples in the privacy of the mountain about the "character traits that a Child of God needs to develop." The teachings actually encompass chapters 5 thru 7.

The mountains and hills were difficult for the multitudes to gather... and it was a place where He could be alone with the "few" of His disciples, to teach them in private and in "plain, clear language" other than the "meaning-hiding" parables that He spoke solely to the multitudes [Matt.13].

Or He went up to a mountain just to be alone, to pray to His Father.

"And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when evening was come, He was there alone." (Matt.14:23)

So, the mountain or hill was to get away privately to teach His disciples... or to get away from EVERYONE for awhile.

Jesus was on the mount to tell people about the Beatitudes so they can get to heaven and he thought long and hard and deceided to aware people about them so they can change their ways in order to get to heaven.

The point of it was to get people to heaven as you may have heard Jesus was tempeted by the devil but the devil didn't fool Jesus. Jesus travelled to the sermon on the mount and spoke the word of the lord and many people came then Jesus told them how to ensure you get to heaven to collect your reward from God in the catholic faith we believe when we die we go to heaven and your lord id God and Jesus we also belive we have two mum's and two dad's oour parents on earth and our parents in heaven God and our mother Mary.

The country where Jesus taught is surrounded by many hills, creating a sort of natural amphitheater where His message could be heard by thousands. There were at least two distinct instances of the Savior teaching on hillsides, generally near the Sea of Gallilee, and in both instances people were fed miraculously.
