Because The Bible, the most historically backed up religious book in the world, clearly states who jesus was, and what his purpose on earth was as well, particularly this is show by the book of John, Matthew, and other early New Testament books.

The Jews were not idiots: they were normal human beings and reacted accordingly. Their once-independent nation was now a conquered vassal state of a despised conquering all-powerful empire, whose soldiers polluted the Jewish soil by their very presence; this despised empire had appointed a man as king over them from the even-more-despised [if that is possible] enemy nation of Idumea, or Edom, which they had long hated and had many wars with. Their religious prophets had for hundreds of years foretold of one of their own people, called the Messiah. Their religious and political leaders twisted these prophecies for their own ends and said this Messiah would come as their all-conquering warrior and leader charging in on a white horse, would kill all their enemies, and make Israel the greatest nation on earth. The trouble is, this was only a half-truth: they didn't read the part where He had to die first, and then after that return as King of kings and Lord of lords. They only read the part they liked. Even today, 2000 years later, Jewish religious leaders and teachers still refuse to read the Psalms prophesying the death of their Messiah, all in great detail. The Messiah ie Jesus Christ, came as a Suffering Servant and not as a Conquering King, and they expected great things of Him. However, they believed He couldn't possibly be their long-prophesied Messiah because He didn't fit their mindset and fulfill their expectations of getting rid of the hated Romans and king Herod, so He was killed.

We all wonder why it is that so many people do not believe that Jesus is the messiah. But some Scriptures give us an inkling of the reason why -

Romans 9.18. Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will [have mercy], and whom he will he hardeneth.

John 6.44. No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

And Jesus said that we must be born again, (John 3.3), and I suppose that this is a prerequisite of receiving him, -

John 1.12. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, [even] to them that believe on his name:

13. Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

At the time of christ people were expecting the messiah or king of the jews to help deliver them from roman oppression. Jesus was gentle and loving and had no desire to be a ruler or lead a rebellion. He stated his kingdom is not of this world. People were confused about what he was here to do.

The word 'Messiah' comes from the Hebrew for the Anointed one. The Jews had long hoped for a great leader or Messiah, and the New Testament portrays Jesus as the fulfilment of those hopes.
