Why was John reluctant to baptize Jesus?

John knows who Jesus is, that he is the son of God. He also knows that Jesus is without sin. The baptizing that John is performing is for those who are repentant of their sins. Since Jesus is without sin, he believes he shouldn't baptize him. Jesus, however, is not being asked to be baptized as a symbol of repentance for sin but rather showing that he is presenting himself to his Father to do His will. It is only in Matthew's Gospel that John is reluctant to baptise Jesus, saying to him (KJV), "I have need to be baptised of thee, and comest thou to me?"

John's Gospel provides quite the opposite account, with John welcoming Jesus and saying that he had known Jesus would be coming to be baptised (John 1:33), "And I knew him not:but that he sent me to baptise with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Spirit."
