Fear. Simply fear that a general or generals, supported by other high ranking officers, would in time be able to oust, to supplant him and assume the leadership of the USSR. Stalin thereby proved himself to be a very "prudent", ruthless tyrant, who never hesitated to order the execution of any and all others he believed could possibly challenge him. Even Hitler could not equal his efficient disposal of real or imagined enemies.
Leon Trotsky, along with Vladimir Lenin, was one of the founders of the Bolshevik Revolution and as such, he was one of the few people who had enough prestige in Russia to be able to challenge the dictatorial rule of Stalin. Therefore, Stalin wanted to get rid of Trotsky as a potential rival. Stalin was a paranoid schizophrenic anyway, and he always thought that people were plotting against him.
I don't know a single event that brought about Trotsky's death. If there was one, someone who understands better than I should explain it.
Stalin had him assassinated because he was a political enemy and thorn in Stalin's side.

In 1940, a Spanish-born Soviet agent, Ramon Mercader, murdered Trotsky at his home in Mexico City. He plunged an ice pick into his head, Trotsky screamed the most terrible scream and died a day later. Ramon Mercader got a beating from Trotskys staff but Trotsky sparred him as he said he now had a story to tell. :0

Joseph Stalin's reign as supreme leader of the USSR ended upon his death on 5 March 1953. His death was a result of a major stroke on 1 March 1953 which brought his death in the next few days. Later analysis in 2003 suggests Stalin had ingested a powerful rat poison, warfarin, that predisposes the victim to a hemorrhagic stroke which sums up his death as a possible murder.

Stalin allowed approximately 10 million people in the Ukraine to starve to death in 1932 and 1933 when he collected all their grain for exportation leaving them nothing to eat in order to finance his 5yr plan. This period is called the "Holodomor". The fact is that Stalin is responsible for the death of millions more than Adolph Hitler!
