I THINK Joseph Stalin was cruel because of his messed up childhood. When he was a kid he was not only totally poor, but lost all of his siblings...even though that's no reason to not care about anything and just kill people when you feel like it!!!
In the book " A Brotherhood of Tyrants", Stalin along with Hitler and Napoleon are said to suffer from manic depression which generates huge mood swings. Each under the delusion of the manic mood was driven to obtain absolute power and then brutally misuse it. When Hitler surprise attacked Russia in WWII, the depression mood swung back over whelming Stalin thus crippling him into inaction against the invading Nazis for weeks.
These mood swings had no limiter because these tyrants thought themselves absolute with no accountability to either God or man. Each became genuinely evil!
Stalin's rule is considered one of the harshest and most inhumane of modern times.
He was a dictator because he fits the characteristics of a dictator. They hold the sole power in the country, and they were not democratically elected.
