I don't know that you could call them 'ground breaking' as there was no true originality in them, they simply translated current political philosophy into real world application(s) or examples. Most of the theory behind them were taken from other more formal books on the subject. If anything Mr. Paine had the ability to translate these theories into current real world application, and convey this / these, ideals in a simplified language that a greater portion of the populous could understand.

Common Sense was so unique because it was written in common language (instead of a sort of abstract philosophy that was hard to understand) that common people could understand.
