Due to alliances when one country declares war on another country the alliance country would help out its ally. So a war between 2 countries could turn into a war between 8 countries turning it into a "World War" between many countries around a large area.

World War II is quite rightly considered to be a 'total war' not only because of the number of nations involved and the vast areas through which it occurred. It also should be considered 'total war' because of the effect that it had upon all levels and sections of the major combatants, both soldiers and citizens alike.
