Dorothea Payne Todd Madison, known as Dolley Madison, was renowned partially for her contributions to the arts and mainly for her role, in the administration of her husband James Madison, as one of the First Ladies of the United States.

During the British-American War Of 1812 To 1815("Mr. Madison's War," as it was unfairly called), when the British Army invaded and sacked Washington, D.C., burning the President's house almost to the ground, Dolley prevented a portrait of George Washington that Gilbert Stuart had painted from falling into British hands.
